Mind & Music

with The Luvely Rae

The start of a new year always inspires much reflection. When I look back on the past 12 years I’ve spent in New York and I see so many moments of joy and pain. Friendships made and unions broken. This week’s Mind & Music is inspired by the journey that is life in New York City.

First up on the playlist is Scream by Michael Jackson. Michael Jackson was an artist and businessman who worked hard to bring his visions to life. Everybody wanted something from him. Even today 4 years after his death there is still fighting over his will and his estate. I love this song.

Lyrics like:

“You Keep changin’ the rules.
While I keep playin’ the game”

seem to sum up the way I feel about the art scene in New York and the corporate culture.

Then there’s this tasty bit:

“Tired of injustice
Tired of the schemes
The lies are disgusting
So what does it mean”

Well I don’t  know why my mom raised me to take pride in my work and to try to do a good job, but clearly that is not what it takes to get ahead in the “Big Apple”. Yep, Scream on full volume sounds good to me right about now.

Next up on the playlist is a little Florence and The Machine. Yes things suck, but better off putting those dog days behind you.

Okay so now it’s time to turn it up a notch with Pink’s Raise Your Glass. Why this song? No it’s not the bit about the empty glass, though you could call that a metaphore. I’m looking more these lyrics:

So raise your glass if you are wrong
In all the right ways

and this little bit

And you’re treated like a fool
You could choose to let it go

Choose to let go of all the drama and you’ll be much happier for it. I did and I’m already looking forward to the fabulous adventures to come.
